PIGMENTATION DISORDERS
Loss of Color (skin lightening or total loss of skin color)
Many skin diseases, allergies or irritations can lead to temporary skin lightening, especially noticeable in darker pigmented people. Your dermatologist can identify the cause of the pigment disorder and give an appropriate treatment. Sometimes the skin lightening is complete and if not treated quickly it can be permanent. Vitiligo is one such skin condition which has been known to respond to various ultraviolet or laser treatments if treated early in the disease.
Increased color or hyperpigmentation is as disfiguring a problem as loss of color. It can be caused by many skin diseases and hormonal issues. Treatment needs to be quick and aggressive or else the increased pigment can be very difficult to remove. One can use bleaching agents, chemical peels and lasers to treat some of these conditions. Of course, sun protection is essential in these individuals.
