What's New in Acne Treatment
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has proven to be the most effective new treatment for moderate to severe acne in people of all ages. Monthly treatments with a topical lotion containing aminolevulinic acid for one hour in the dermatologists office followed by a 15 minute blue-light treatment is all it takes. After an average of 4 treatments a person's acne can be very effectively treated. Many dermatologists have replaced their use of Accutane with this topical and safer treatment.
When a patient has already used various topical and internal antibiotics for months to years with minimal success and is serious about improving their skin's appearance without compromising safety, then PDT is very appropriate. Side effects are very temporary and usually mild. Some post treatment pink skin and skin sensitivity should be expected for 24 hours. Sun avoidance for 24 hours after a treatment is necessary.
Unfortunately, many insurance companies are reluctant to pay for this treatment despite being a very safe alternative acne treatment. Patients and their families need to pay for the treatments themselves and then apply for reimbursement from their insurance companies directly.
Kay Dermatology has treated hundreds of acne sufferers with PDT. Call for a consultation to see if this is the treatment for your skin condition
