LASER TREATMENT FOR ACTIVE ACNE & ACNE SCARS
When a person suffers from acne, they usually start by buying various creams, lotions, cleansers, and antibiotic pills. If all this fails, the next step is usually to turn to the medication Accutane. Because many patients and families are wary of this strong medication, various laser techniques have been developed to treat these more difficult cases of acne without the concerns of internal side effects.
For existing acne scars, laser resurfacing is very effective in smoothing out the deeper scars. Superficial scars may even disappear. The Pulsed Dye Laser can then be used to remove the red spots caused by the acne.
Although resurfacing techniques using laser can remove acne scarring, resurfacing itself does not provide a solution for curing active acne. For mild to moderate active acne, Blu-U light treatment is very helpful. For more severe acne, Blu-U light can be combined with Photodynamic treatments, also called Photodynamic Laser Therapy.
Photodynamic Laser Therapy involves the application of a chemical called Levulan to the face, which is left on for about one hour. The face is then exposed to either the "Blu-U" light, the IPL laser or the Pulsed Dye Laser for 12-15 minutes. This results in a reduction of the oil glands causing acne and also reduces the bacteria on the skin. A series of 3-4 treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart can give the patient a long lasting clearing of their acne.
Another alternative to treating severe acne is the ELOS active acne laser treatment. A patient can have a monthly light laser treatment with no downtime.
