Frequently Asked Questions

  • Botox
Botox is a very safe cosmetic material when administered by a well trained physician. All dermatologists have been trained in their residency programs in how to use it. Unfortunately, there are non trained physicians and even non physicians injecting Botox in the U.S. This has given rise to many dissatisfied patients.

  • Leg Vein Treatments
Each country has its favorite vein sclerosing solutions. They are all effective, but in the U.S. we can only use FDA approved solutions. For most leg veins we use various strengths of sodium tetradecyl sulfate or STS. It is not painful to use, does not cause ulcers and scarring and can be used in different concentrations with the foam technique. Polidocanol was very popular in the U.S. for many years but the FDA has yet to agree to letting physicians use it and saline, although FDA approved, is more painful and can cause small scars. We therefore only use STS in our office.

  • Port Wine Stains (Large Vessel Birthmarks)
Laser treatment of port wine stains (PWSs) is safe and effective, but laser treatment of hemangiomas remains controversial, according to a review of laser treatment of pediatric vascular lesions reported in the February issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

  • Restylane™, Radiesse™, Sculptra™ and Other Fillers
When people have a choice to make among similar products it can be confusing which to settle on. Have no fear! Your dermatologist know exactly which filler material is the best for your type of problem. Deep lines and furrow of the face would need Radiesse and or one of the thicker versions of Hyaluronic Acid products (Restylane™ or Juvederm™). Fine lines need a finer type of Hyaluronic Acid product. Certain ones are better used under the eyes and Sculptra may be needed for larger facial defects of fat loss.
