FACIAL LASER RESURFACING
For scars, wrinkles and irregular pigmentation
Dermabrasion was invented in the 1950's as a rather drastic but very effective surgical technique for acne scarring. This was the preferred technique for dermatologists until the early 1990's when the CO2 laser was perfected. The results of the CO2 laser were almost as good as the dermabrasion for acne scars but it was better for facial wrinkles. Unfortunately, due to its strength, this laser would sometimes leave a lighter shade of skin behind and in people of color the results were less than optimum. The Erbium laser was introduced next and gave us almost as good results as the CO2 laser but without as much concern for darker skin.

For light skin individuals having significant acne scars, wrinkles, or sun damage, the CO2 laser is best. For darker skin types, the Erbium laser is better. In each case, up to a week of healing time is needed. For those who cannot take the time off, other laser were developed. Unfortunately, until recently, none of these lasers were very effective despite their "no downtime" characteristic.

Fractionated lasers are relatively new and have revolutionized this field. The first one, Fraxel, has shown over 3 years that acne scars, wrinkles and pigment irregularities can be erased extremely well with minimal to no downtime or pain. We now have a few fractionated lasers available and they work equally well. It takes an average of 4 fractionated laser treatments to get the desired result. Each is performed under no anesthesia or using only topical numbing cream. The only side effects one might notice with these lasers is 12-36 hours of mild redness and swelling of the skin. There is no need to take time off from work with this procedure.
