CHEMICAL PEELS & MICRODERMABRASION
Chemical Peels
Often called by different names, the chemical peel is still the most effective and popular method for skin rejuvenation. There are even ancient Egyptian writings describing how to use peels for skin beautification.

Today, the dermatologist has dozens of modern, purified chemical peeling techniques to make any woman's or man's skin smoother, healthier, more even toned and younger. By exfoliating the top layers of skin, the appearance of many fine wrinkles, agespots, scars, sunspots, and large pores can be improved.

Chemical peels come in three categories:
Light Peel
These peeling techniques usually use "fruit acids" like alpha and beta-hydroxy acids to gently exfoliate the top layers of the skin. When used appropriately, a person can achieve mild to moderate improvement in their skin with no downtime. All skin types can be treated. A light peel removes the topmost layer of skin, require no downtime, and a professionally performed light peel lasts up to six months.
Medium Peel
Usually performed with TCA (trichloroacetic acid) in various strengths, a medium peel takes a few days to heal but the results are much more profound and long lasting. One can expect fine lines, medium wrinkles, facial pigmentation irregularities and shallow acne scars to fade after only one treatment. All skin types can be treated but the darker toned skin needs more after peel follow up. A medium peel exfoliates more layers than a light peel and works on deeper wrinkles and scars. The recovery period, including some swelling, lasts for 7-10 days after treatment, but the benefits from a professional medium peel can last 1-2 years or longer.
Deep Peel
Deep peels were very popular for severe facial problems years ago, before skin lasers were developed. Phenol is the main ingredient in a deep peel, so only heart-healthy, fair-skinned individuals can be treated safely. Deep lines on the lips are one of the most common problems still treated by the deep peels. A deep peel exfoliates at a much deeper level, and is performed in an operating room under sedation and with a heart monitor. The recovery period, including pinkness of the skin, can last from three to six months. The benefits last up to 20 years.
Microdermabrasion
For those with active acne, acne scars, fine wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, and pigmentary problems, a relatively new procedure called microdermabrasion gently and safely resurfaces the upper layers of the skin to a similar depth as that of light chemical peels. All skin types can be treated, and there is no pain and no downtime. The mechanical process uses aluminum crystals or salt crystals, with or without suction.

Microdermabrasion removes the outermost layer of dead skins cells and promotes growth of healthy new cells. The procedure takes less than 60 minutes, can be performed on the face or body, and results can be seen after just one session. Several monthly treatments are recommended for optimum results. While there can be some pinkness or redness immediately after treatment, these discolorations disappear within a few hours.
